Sibling Support Through Creativity

Gentle creative support for siblings navigating big emotions, changing family dynamics and the quiet feelings that are sometimes overlooked.

Siblings of children with additional needs, illness, disability or complex family experiences often carry emotions that can go unseen by the adults around them.

Some children may appear understanding, resilient or independent on the outside while quietly holding feelings such as worry, frustration, sadness, guilt, loneliness or overwhelm underneath.

At Wild Hearts Creative, we believe siblings deserve space for their own feelings too.

Creativity can sometimes offer children a gentle and emotionally safe way to explore thoughts and emotions that may otherwise feel difficult to express openly.

Why creativity can help

Children do not always directly say when they are struggling emotionally.

Creative activities such as drawing, painting and open-ended expression can help children:
- process complex feelings
- express worries safely
- feel seen and heard
- build emotional understanding
- explore identity outside of caregiving roles
- create moments of calm and connection

Sometimes children communicate emotions through creativity long before they fully understand or verbalise them.

Understanding the sibling experience

Every sibling experience is different.

Children may experience feelings such as:
- love and protectiveness
- worry
- frustration
- sadness
- confusion
- guilt
- jealousy
- loneliness
- pride
- responsibility beyond their age

These feelings can exist together at the same time.

At Wild Hearts Creative, we believe children should feel safe to explore mixed emotions without shame or pressure to always appear “fine” or understanding.

Gentle approaches that may help

Many children benefit from support that feels:
- emotionally safe
- calm and child-led
- open-ended
- accepting of mixed feelings
- free from pressure or judgement
- focused on connection and expression

Children often need reassurance that their feelings matter too.

A note from Wild Hearts Creative

Wild Hearts Creative was created with the understanding that children often express emotions through creativity, behaviour and play before they have the words to explain how they feel.

Our creative kits are designed to gently support emotional expression, reflection and wellbeing through calm, compassionate and child-led creative activities.

Further support

This page is not therapeutic advice, but a gentle starting point for families looking to support sibling emotional wellbeing through creativity and connection.

Additional support from schools, charities and therapeutic professionals may also be helpful depending on a child’s individual experiences and needs.
