My Story, My Way -Adoption Identity
Adoption Support Through Creativity
Gentle creative tools to support identity, belonging and emotional expression.
Every adopted child’s story is unique.
Some children may openly talk about thoughts and feelings connected to adoption, birth family, identity or belonging, while others may communicate these feelings more quietly through creativity, play, behaviour, movement or questions that appear over time.
At Wild Hearts Creative, we believe children should never feel pressured to “open up” before they are ready. Instead, we aim to offer gentle, open-ended creative invitations that allow children to explore thoughts and feelings safely, naturally and at their own pace.
Creativity can sometimes help children express what feels difficult to explain through words alone.
Why creativity can help
Children often process emotions differently from adults.
Drawing, storytelling, painting and imaginative expression can sometimes feel less overwhelming than direct conversations, especially when exploring complex feelings connected to identity, belonging, loss, relationships or life story.
Creative activities can help create moments of:
- connection
- reflection
- emotional safety
- curiosity
- self-expression
- communication without pressure
For some children, creativity may become a gentle bridge into conversation. For others, it may simply provide a safe outlet for feelings and thoughts that are still being understood internally.
Understanding identity, belonging and birth family connections
Thoughts and feelings connected to adoption can change and evolve throughout childhood.
Children may have questions, emotions or curiosities around:
- identity
- belonging
- birth family
- early experiences
- family relationships
- similarities and differences
- life story
- loss and connection
These thoughts may appear at unexpected times and can sometimes sit alongside love, security and happiness within their adoptive family.
At Wild Hearts Creative, we believe children should feel safe to explore these thoughts without judgement, shame or pressure to feel a certain way.
Creative expression can help create space for children to:
- wonder
- ask questions
- express mixed feelings
- revisit thoughts over time
- feel heard and supported
Gentle approaches that may help
Every child is different, but many children benefit from support that feels:
- child-led
- emotionally safe
- calm and non-pressured
- open-ended rather than heavily directed
- flexible over time
- grounded in connection and curiosity
Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen naturally through shared creative moments rather than direct questioning.
A note from Wild Hearts Creative
Wild Hearts Creative was created from both professional experience working with children and lived family experience.
We understand that emotional wellbeing is deeply individual and that children often need compassionate, flexible spaces to process feelings in ways that feel safe for them.
Our creative kits are designed to gently support emotional expression through creativity, reflection and connection.
